Our Recent Zoom Event – A Presentation by Prof. Yaw Sekyi-Baidoo
Professor Yaw Sekyi-Baidoo is one of the most sung composers in modern Ghanaian church choral music, with a gift for crafting infectious and easy-to-sing tunes embraced across denominations. He is a scholar and an accomplished academic, holding undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Cape Coast and the University of Ghana’s Institute of African Studies, specializing in English Linguistics and Literature. He has been a full-time faculty member at the University of Education, Winneba, since 1996, serving as Dean for over 11 years, head of a department on three occasions, and a Member or Chair of high-ranking university committees, including twice as a Governing Council member. But beyond academia, he is a passionate choral musician. As a composer, he has contributed close to 1,400 pieces over 43 years, including several timeless songs beloved by choirs nationwide. He has directed Methodist Church Choirs at diocesan and national levels. As the chairman of the remarkable GHAMECC for many years, he spearheaded landmark initiatives such as the construction of the Methodist Praise and the creation of a Ghanaian-composed hymn book.
